About “Charity” in Hebrew
Unlike the English word 'charity' which implies voluntary generosity, tzedakah comes from the root tzedek meaning justice or righteousness. Giving to those in need is not considered optional kindness but a moral obligation. Maimonides famously outlined eight levels of tzedakah, with the highest being helping someone become self-sufficient.
Example
נָתַנּוּ צְדָקָה לִפְנֵי שַׁבָּת.
We gave tzedakah before Shabbat.
This word starts with the Hebrew letter tsadi.
