Commandment

There are 613 mitzvot (commandments) in the Torah, covering every aspect of life from ethical behavior to ritual observance. In popular usage, mitzvah has come to mean any good deed or act of kindness. The bar/bat mitzvah ceremony marks a young person's acceptance of responsibility for performing the commandments.
