Twin Caves, Bet Shemesh

Legend has it, a woman who was trying for many years to have children was told to go to this cave and drink the water collected there. A year later, she was blessed with giving birth to twins, and so the cave at the end of this path is named the Twins Cave. The landscape surrounding the Twins Cave is full of round, rollings hills that are almost reminiscent of pregnant bellies. I'm always fascinated with how ancient this land is, with so much beauty and history to explore right near my home in Bet Shemesh.

Kotel (Western Wall)

It moves me just to think how many prayers have been poured out before these walls. Before I made Aliyah to Israel, I had actually never stepped foot in the land. I did not feel like I could accurately attempt to capture the energy and feeling of the Wall until I could experience prayer there in person, so for years, I never allowed myself to painting the Western Wall. This series of paintings is my attempt to connect to the Kotel through my art on a more personal level. I hope this perspective, as if the viewer is right there and looking up towards the Heavens from below, will transport the viewer to one of the holiest places in the world.

In Judaism, grapes signify tiferet, Hebrew for beauty. Grapes are also one of the seven sacred fruits that are mentioned in the Torah as providing nourishment in the land of Israel. What could be more beautiful than the rolling hills of Jerusalem bursting with rows of with lush, tart grapevines?

Holy Cityscapes

The mystical old city of Tzvat (Safed) is nestled in the north of Israel. Surrounded by mountains, cobblestone streets and winding alleys, and the signature painted turquoise on doors, walls and fences accents make this city an artist's dream to capture in paint. After many years of dreaming, I finally was able to visit Tzvat for the first time this summer with my family and it was truly like walking in a painting! In Tzvat, you can feel the energy in the air and the history beneath your feet. Tzvat is one of the 4 holy cities in Israel. Known as the birthplace of Kabbalah, home to many of Judaism's most revered sages and mystics. Many people make pilgrimages to Tzvat to visit the burial places of "the Ari" - Rabbi Yitzchak Luria, Rabbi Yosef Caro, and Rabbi Chaim Vital, and many more. Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, author of the teachings of the Zohar, is buried nearby in Meron.

My favorite space in our apartment is our marpeset, Hebrew for balcony. My apartment is are on the top story, no elevator, so we walk up and down 52 steps every day just to enter/leave the apt, those stairs are like our built-in gym membership. Being on the top floor, after climbing our steps higher and higher, we are rewarded with most stunning views off our balcony. We see Old Bet Shemesh, the Sorek Valley, vineyards, fields, forest, and even the outskirts of Tel Aviv and the Mediterranean Ocean on a clear day. Don't even get me started on the clouds, the magnificent sunsets, and the flocks of wild green ring-neck parakeets! Oh how I love sitting on my porch with my watercolors, basking in it all.

I made Aliyah to Israel a little over a year ago, and I remember being blown away by how beautiful the Land of Israel is. I had never been to Israel before moving here, and once we started exploring, I kept saying ,"why didn't anyone tell me how gorgeous it is here!?" There is so much variation in such a small span of land. Sometimes on a drive, you can see completely different terrains on one side of the road than the other. From lush, emerald green rolling mountains in the North, to pastel and burnt sienna jagged desert ravines., From turquoise waters of the Dead Sea, to hilltop vineyards, to sandy Mediterranean shores back up to snow capped Mount Hermon - it's all right here. I felt I had to respond to this new land I found myself living in and my art took a major pivot from focusing on themes of capturing the likeness of a person in paint (I used to almost exclusively paint portraits) to capturing the essence of the Land of Israel.
