Hanukkah

Chanukah celebrates the Maccabees' victory over the Greek-Syrians and the miracle of one day's oil lasting eight days in the rededicated Temple. Families light the chanukiah (menorah) each night, adding one candle, and eat oil-fried foods like sufganiyot (doughnuts) and latkes (potato pancakes). The word chanukah means 'dedication,' referring to the rededication of the Holy Temple.
