About

The Month of Tishrei

Tishrei is the most holiday-rich month in the Hebrew calendar. It begins with the Days of Awe (Yamim Noraim): Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, then continues with Sukkot and Simchat Torah. The name derives from the Akkadian word for "beginning," and tradition holds the world was created on 1 Tishrei.

Significance

Rosh Chodesh Tishrei

Rosh Chodesh Tishrei is unique: it is the only Rosh Chodesh that coincides with a major holiday — Rosh Hashanah. Because of this, there is no separate announcement of the Molad on the preceding Shabbat (Shabbat Mevarchim is not recited before Tishrei). The shofar is not blown on the day before Rosh Hashanah to distinguish between the custom and the obligation.

Spiritual Themes

Themes of Tishrei

Tishrei is the month of divine judgment, atonement, and joy. The Scales (Moznayim) represent the cosmic weighing of deeds. The progression from Rosh Hashanah (awe) through Yom Kippur (purification) to Sukkot (joy) reflects the complete cycle of spiritual renewal.
