About

The Month of Tevet

Tevet is the coldest and darkest month, yet the last days of Chanukah extend into its beginning, bringing light into the deepest winter. The 10th of Tevet is a fast day commemorating Nebuchadnezzar’s siege of Jerusalem, which led to the destruction of the First Temple. Despite the somber tone, Tevet teaches that sparks of holiness exist even in the darkest times.

Significance

Rosh Chodesh Tevet

Rosh Chodesh Tevet is unique because it always falls during Chanukah — the only Rosh Chodesh that coincides with another celebration. Three Torah scrolls are taken out: one for Rosh Chodesh, one for Chanukah, and the regular weekly reading if it falls on Shabbat. This convergence of light (Chanukah) and renewal (Rosh Chodesh) in the darkest month carries deep symbolism.

Spiritual Themes

Themes of Tevet

Tevet teaches the power of holy anger (ka’as d’kedusha) — righteous indignation that fuels positive change. The Kabbalists associate Tevet with the sense of anger, which when properly channeled, becomes the determination to fight injustice. The goat (Gedi) climbs steadily through the most difficult terrain.
