Torah Portion of the Week

Vayakhel ויקהל

Exodus 35:1–38:20

Parshat Vayakhel mirrors earlier parshiyot — the divine blueprint now becomes physical reality. Moses gathers the entire community, first reaffirming the sanctity of Shabbat (even the sacred work of building must pause on the seventh day), then calling for voluntary offerings. The people respond with such overwhelming generosity that Moses must order them to stop. Bezalel and Oholiab, filled with divine wisdom, lead the craftsmen in constructing everything: the layered curtains and coverings, the gold-plated wall boards, the Ark with its cherubim, the Table, the Menorah beaten from a single block of gold, the Incense Altar, the Copper Altar, and the courtyard enclosure.

I Kings 7:40–7:50

The craftsmanship of Solomon's Temple vessels parallels Bezalel's work on the Tabernacle. Both accounts detail the skilled artisanry of sacred objects — basins, lampstands, and holy implements.
