Exodus 1:1–6:1

Parshat Shemot opens the book of Exodus with the Israelites enslaved in Egypt. A new Pharaoh, threatened by their numbers, decrees the drowning of all Hebrew male infants. Moses is born, hidden in a basket on the Nile, raised in Pharaoh's palace, flees to Midian after killing an Egyptian, and encounters God at the burning bush, receiving the mission to free His people.
