Torah Portion of the Week

Nitzavim-Vayelech נצבים-וילך

Deuteronomy 29:9–31:30

The double parsha of Nitzavim-Vayelech encompasses Moses' final public acts on the last day of his life — grand covenant renewal followed by the transfer of leadership to Joshua. Nitzavim binds not only those present — 'from your woodcutters to your water drawers' — but all future generations. It warns of devastation if they abandon God, yet pivots to one of the Torah's most hopeful prophecies: even after exile, God will gather them from the farthest reaches of the earth and circumcise their hearts to love Him. Moses declares the Torah is not remote — 'it is not in the heavens... but very near to you' — and sets before the people the most dramatic choice in Scripture: 'Choose life.' Vayelech then records Moses at 120 formally commissioning Joshua, commanding the national Torah reading every seven years (Hakhel), writing the Song of Ha'azinu as a witness, completing the Torah, and placing it beside the Ark.
