Torah Portion of the Week

Mishpatim משפטים

Exodus 21:1–24:18

Parshat Mishpatim presents the first comprehensive body of law given to Israel after the Ten Commandments. Covering civil, criminal, and moral legislation — from the treatment of servants to personal injury, property damage, lending, and the sabbatical year — it forms the practical foundation of the covenant. The parsha concludes with the dramatic covenant ceremony at Sinai, where Moses sprinkles the 'blood of the covenant' and then ascends the mountain for forty days.
