Torah Portion of the Week

Metzora מצורע

Leviticus 14:1–15:33

Parshat Metzora ('One Afflicted') is the counterpart to Tazria — where Tazria diagnosed, Metzora heals. It lays out the elaborate purification process for someone recovered from tzaraat: a ceremony with two birds, cedar wood, scarlet thread, and hyssop outside the camp, followed by shaving, immersion, and finally offerings at the Tabernacle on the eighth day. The parsha also addresses tzaraat of houses in the Land of Israel — discolored stones that must be removed or, in severe cases, the entire house demolished. It concludes with the laws of bodily discharges (zav and zavah) that cause ritual impurity and require immersion and offerings for purification, closing with the warning that the children of Israel must be separated from their impurity lest they defile the Tabernacle and die.
