Torah Portion of the Week

Matot-Masei מטות-מסעי

Numbers 30:2–36:13

The double parsha of Matot-Masei brings the Book of Numbers to its close. Matot opens with the laws of vows and oaths, then recounts the war of vengeance against Midian — a 12,000-man army led by Pinchas defeats the five Midianite kings and Balaam, with spoils meticulously divided. The tribes of Reuben and Gad request the Transjordanian pastureland; Moses agrees on condition their warriors lead the conquest of Canaan. Masei then catalogues all forty-two stations of the Israelites' desert travels, defines the precise borders of the Promised Land, mandates forty-eight Levitical cities including six cities of refuge, lays out detailed laws of homicide, and resolves the inheritance of Zelophehad's daughters — they must marry within their tribe to preserve each tribe's God-given portion.
