Torah Portion of the Week

Kedoshim קדושים

Leviticus 19:1–20:27

Parshat Kedoshim ('Holy Ones') is spoken to the entire congregation of Israel — one of the few parshiyot addressed to the whole nation rather than just Moses or the priests. Its opening command, 'You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy,' sets the tone for a sweeping code of ethical and ritual law. It includes honoring parents, Shabbat observance, leaving harvest corners for the poor, honest weights and measures, the prohibition of gossip and standing idly by a neighbor's blood, and the towering command 'Love your neighbor as yourself' — which Rabbi Akiva called the great principle of the Torah. The second chapter prescribes penalties for Molech worship, sorcery, cursing parents, and various sexual transgressions, closing with the call to remain holy and separate.
