Torah Portion of the Week

Ha'azinu האזינו

Deuteronomy 32:1–32:52

Parshat Ha'azinu ('Give ear') is Moses' great song — a sweeping prophetic poem that condenses the entire arc of Israel's history from election to exile to ultimate redemption. Written in a unique two-column format in the Torah scroll, the song calls heaven and earth as eternal witnesses. It celebrates God as the Rock whose work is perfect, contrasts divine faithfulness with Israel's ingratitude — 'a crooked and perverse generation' that grew fat and abandoned its Maker — and foretells the terrible consequences of apostasy: famine, plague, wild beasts, the sword, and dispersion. Yet the song does not end in despair; God will ultimately avenge His servants' blood, bring retribution upon the enemies, and atone for His land and His people. After reciting the song, God commands Moses to ascend Mount Nebo, view the Promised Land, and die there — 'because you broke faith with Me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribath-kadesh.'

שמואל ב

David's Song of praise — 'The Lord is my rock, my fortress, my deliverer' — parallels Moses' Song in the parsha. Both great leaders compose poetic testaments to God's faithfulness at the end of their lives.
