Torah Portion of the Week

Chukat חקת

Numbers 19:1–22:1

Parshat Chukat ('Statute') opens with the paradigmatic 'decree beyond reason' — the Red Heifer whose ashes purify the impure but render the pure impure. The narrative then leaps to the fortieth year: Miriam dies and the well that sustained the people dries up. When the people cry for water, God tells Moses to speak to a rock; Moses strikes it instead and is told he will not enter the Land. Edom refuses passage; the Israelites detour. Aaron dies atop Mount Hor, his priestly garments transferred to his son Elazar. The people complain again and fiery serpents bite them — Moses makes a copper serpent on a pole and those who look at it live. The parsha's final act is the dramatic eastward march: the Song of the Well, the miraculous passage through the Arnon gorge, and the military victories over Sihon king of the Amorites and Og king of Bashan, bringing Israel to the banks of the Jordan opposite Jericho.
