Torah Portion of the Week

Beha'alotcha בהעלותך

Numbers 8:1–12:16

Parshat Beha'alotcha ('When You Raise Up') begins with the daily kindling of the Menorah and the consecration of the Levites, then transitions dramatically from order to chaos. After describing the Second Passover (Pesach Sheni) for those who missed the first, the silver trumpets, and the orderly departure from Sinai, the narrative fractures: the people complain, God's fire burns at the camp's edge, the mixed multitude craves meat, Moses cries out in exhaustion, seventy elders receive prophetic spirit, quail arrive in devastating abundance, and finally Miriam speaks against Moses and is struck with tzaraat. This parsha marks the turning point of Numbers — from the hopeful preparations at Sinai to the disillusionments of the wilderness.

Haftarah הפטרה

Zechariah 2:14–4:7

זכריה

Zechariah's vision of a golden menorah with seven lamps connects to the parsha's opening command to Aaron to light the menorah. 'Not by might nor by power, but by My spirit, says the Lord.'
