About “Truth” in Hebrew
Emet means truth, and it holds a position of supreme importance in Jewish values. The Talmud declares that 'the seal of God is truth,' and the three Hebrew letters of emet — aleph, mem, tav — are the first, middle, and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet, symbolizing that truth encompasses everything from beginning to end.
The pursuit of emet is considered fundamental to Jewish spiritual life. The Shema is followed by the word 'emet' — affirming that the declaration of God's unity is true. Three times daily, Jews conclude the Shema with 'Adonai Eloheichem emet' (the Lord your God is true). This constant affirmation creates a life oriented toward truth-seeking and truth-telling.
Jewish legal tradition is built on the assumption that truth must be pursued relentlessly. Witnesses in a beit din (Jewish court) are warned about the gravity of false testimony. The commandment 'Distance yourself from falsehood' (Exodus 23:7) uses the word 'distance' — not merely 'do not lie' but actively create space between yourself and untruth. This is understood as the most stringent possible prohibition.
The relationship between emet and shalom (peace) creates one of Judaism's most interesting ethical tensions. The Talmud tells of cases where truth might be modified to preserve peace — such as praising a bride's beauty regardless of appearance. This nuanced approach to truth recognizes that emet must sometimes be tempered by compassion, though outright falsehood is always condemned.
